From the author of The Gone-Away World - an exhilarating espionage murder-mystery.

There has been a strange death in the quiet village of Shrewton old Donny Caspian has lost his head. In the Copper Kettle tea rooms, Tom Rice, a junior nobody from the Treasury, puzzles over the details of the case. He has been sent by his superiors to oversee the investigation, but is he supposed to help or hinder? At the next table, octogenarian superspy Edie Banister nibbles a slice of cake and struggles not to become Miss Marple. But what is the connection between the two? Who killed Donny Caspian, and why?

Taking in Rice's present and Edie's daring past, from duels on shipboard to death in back alleys, 'Edie Investigates' is a superb short story from the incomparable Nick Harkaway.

Also included with this short, the first chapter of Nick Harkaway's long-awaited new novel Angelmaker.

Edie Investigates eBook Nick Harkaway

Good old Donny Caspian is dead. Tom Rice, a British civil servant, is sent to investigate the scene of the crime and report back. Super spy Edie Banister is interested in the case as well because Donny was an old friend who helped her once. Edie watches the youngman over tea and cake while trying to appear to be an old spinster lady. When it becomes obvious he is in over his head Edie springs into action.

This is an e-short written to promote Nick Harkaway's fabulous new book "Angelmaker." Edie was my favorite character in "Angelmaker" and the reason I bought this short story. The writing style is pure Harkaway, which makes is a joy to read, but it doesn't have a satisfying ending. The story is complete in itself, you don't have to read "Angelmaker" for the conclusion. Still, I felt like the murder was never fully resolved.

"Edie Investigates" is a short story involving one of the main characters from Nick Harkaway's second novel, "AngelMaker". It describes the events surrounding a murder investigation in a sleepy English town that has lost the glory of its earlier history. Great introduction to Edie.

The publication also contains the first chapter of AngelMaker.
I can't get enough of Nick Harkaway, and Edie was my favorite character in Angelmaker, so of course I loved this story. Wish he'd give us more!
I would rate it better if it were the first chapter of a book. But it's merely pretending to be a short story - too many things started that beg being finished or expanded on. Good writing - just didn't feel like like a nicely constrained short story.
Preliminary to Angelmaker. Not as good. Very basic.
Harkaway is brilliant! Why aren't you reading everything he's ever written, right now?????
Edie Investigates is a joyful little short story from Nick Harkaway. In it, he explores one of the characters from Angelmaker, Edie Banister. We discover some of her past, her ties to a world of secrecy, super-spies, international intrigue and ninjas of some sort (not explicitly ninjas, but come on, there have to be ninjas!).

I won't give anything away, but will simply say I found this a delightful little story. The characters were engaging, humorous and felt very alive. I look forward to reading more about Edie in Angelmaker.
This eshort is a bit of backstory about Edie, the harmless elderly lady/deadly spy from Angelmaker. Fills in her background. Also, we get to have a little more fun watching her do her thing. I don't know if I would understand where this short story is coming from, if I hadn't read Angelmaker, but then short stories are sometimes confusing simply because their length will necessitate leaving out the broader context. I love this character and would read more stories with her in them.
